چکیده

Recent surveys and sample collection have conWrmed the endemicity of Dermanyssus gallinae in poultry farming worldwide. The reduction in number and eYcacy of many acaricide products has accentuated the prevalence rates of this poultry ectoparasite observed more often in non intensive systems such as free-range, barns or backyards and more often in laying hens than in broiler birds. The lack of knowledge from producers and the utilisation of inadequate, ineVective or illegal chemicals in many countries have been responsible for the increase in infestation rates due to the spread of acaricide resistance. The costs for control methods and treatment are showing the tremendous economic impact of this ectoparasite on poultry meat and egg industries. This paper reviews the prevalence O. Evaluation of a sampling trap for Dermanyssus gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae).

Traps made by rectangular pieces of 3 mm thick corrugated cardboard of four different sizes, 200 by 140 (A), 140 by 100 (B), 100 by 70 (C), and 200 by 40 mm (D), were evaluated as a sampling device for the chicken mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer). Mites were trapped during 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 d, respectively, in a poultry house heavily infested with the parasite. Significantly greater number...

Diversity, geographic distribution, and habitat-specific variations of microbiota in natural populations of the chicken mite, Dermanyssus gallinae.

Dermanyssus gallinae is considered to be the most economically significant ectoparasite to affect egg-laying poultry in Europe. This mite can also act as a vector for a number of pathogens. The array of bacteria associated with D. gallinae mites could provide insight into the biology and population dynamics of arthropods, but at the present time little information is available. To understand th...

Haematophagus Mites in Poultry Farms of Iran

BACKGROUND Blood sucking mites are important avian ectoparasites which being found on bird species worldwide. Their presence are problematic for the producers either through potential direct effects on weight gain, egg production, sperm production in roosters or as nuisance pests on worker handle hens and eggs. The aim of this study was pointing out of the status of haematophagus mites. METHO...

Acaricidal effect of eleven essential oils against the poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae)

The acaricidal effect of eleven essential oils (Sweet basil, Common juniper, Atlas cedar, Coriander, Blue gum, European silver fir, Common lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Scots pine, Summer savory) against poultry red mite Dermanyssus gallinae was tested in vitro using the direct contact method, at three different doses: 0.2 mg/cm2, 0.4 mg/cm2 and 0.6 mg/cm2. The results of the study revealed that...

Bird Mite Infestation

Mites in the genus Dermanyssus are external parasites of birds, rodents and other mammals. The most common member of this group is the Chicken Mite that infests poultry roosts and wild bird nests. The chicken mite feeds primarily at night when the birds return the nest or roast area. They hide during the day in nearby cracks, crevices and other protected sites. These mites are known to infest h...

Comparison of four methods of extracting DNA from D. gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae).

Dermanyssus gallinae is one of the most serious ectoparasites of poultry and it has been implicated as a vector of several major pathogenic diseases. Molecular detection of such pathogens in mites is crucial and therefore, an important step is the extraction of their DNA from mites. So, we compared four DNA extraction protocols from engorged and unfed individual mites: a conventional method usi...
